Weight is the first decision

Almost every hoodie enquiry starts with weight, and almost every one uses the word "heavyweight" without a number behind it. Heavyweight is a relative term, not a specification: what one supplier calls heavyweight another sells as midweight.

Give us a GSM figure on your tech pack, or send a hoodie whose weight you want matched. A physical reference is the more reliable of the two, because GSM alone does not tell you how a fabric drapes, how much it will shrink, or how it feels against the skin. The actual fabric is confirmed at sampling before bulk is approved, so you assess the real thing rather than a number.

Fit

Fit is where a hoodie range succeeds or fails, and the vocabulary is imprecise enough that descriptions alone rarely survive to a good sample.

A boxy hoodie is wide through the chest with a short body, so it sits at or above the waistband. An oversized hoodie is wide and long, with the shoulder seam dropped well down the arm. A standard fit follows the body with a regular set-in shoulder. Those are three different patterns, and the difference between them is measurements — body length, chest width, shoulder drop, sleeve length — not adjectives. Send a chart or a garment.

  • Pullover and full-zip
  • Boxy, oversized, relaxed and standard fits
  • Drop-shoulder and set-in-sleeve construction
  • Kangaroo pocket, split pocket, zip pocket or none
  • Two-panel or three-panel hood
  • Rib cuff and hem, or raw and open hem

The hood

A two-panel hood is the simpler construction and sits flatter against the back. A three-panel hood has a centre gusset, which gives it more structure and lets it stand up when down. Lining the hood in a contrast fabric is a common brand detail and adds a small amount to cost.

Drawcord is a detail worth specifying: flat or round cord, metal or moulded tips, custom-printed tips with your name, or no cord at all. On a heavyweight hood, a substantial cord looks correct and a thin one looks like an oversight.

Fabric

  • French terry, loop-back inside, the usual base for a structured heavyweight hoodie
  • Brushed-back fleece, softer and warmer with more drape
  • Cotton and cotton-rich blends
  • Cotton–poly blends where shrinkage control matters
  • Matched or contrast rib for cuffs, hem and neck

Garment dye, enzyme wash, stone wash and distressing can be applied where the fabric and construction suit them. These treatments change dimensions, so they have to be planned into the pattern before sampling rather than added afterwards.

Decoration

  • Embroidery, flat and 3D puff, including large back placements
  • Chenille patches and appliqué
  • Screen print, including discharge and specialty inks
  • Puff and high-density print
  • Silicone and rubber patches
  • Woven labels, printed neck labels and hangtags

Heavy embroidery on a soft fleece can pull the fabric out of shape unless backed properly. Where a large embroidered back piece is wanted, we would normally specify a firmer fabric or a backing, and will raise it at quotation rather than at sampling.

Sampling and reorders

Expect more than one sample round on a first hoodie. Getting a heavyweight oversized fit right is iterative, and correcting a pattern at sample stage costs a fraction of accepting a bulk run that is nearly right.

Once a fit is approved, the pattern is held. A second colourway or a reorder next season comes back as the same shape, which matters more to a growing brand than almost anything else on this page.

Frequently asked questions

What GSM do you offer?
We source against your specification rather than working from a single house weight. Give us a GSM on your tech pack or send a hoodie whose weight you want matched — a physical reference is more reliable, because GSM alone does not describe drape, shrinkage or hand.
Can you make oversized and boxy hoodies?
Yes. They are different patterns, and the difference is measurements rather than adjectives — body length, chest width, shoulder drop and sleeve length. Send a chart or a reference garment.
Can you do a three-panel hood?
Yes. The centre gusset gives more structure and lets the hood stand when down. Two-panel sits flatter. Contrast hood lining is a common brand detail and adds a little to cost.
Can you apply wash treatments or distressing?
Where the fabric and construction suit them. These treatments change garment dimensions, so they must be planned into the pattern before sampling rather than added after a fit is approved.
Will a reorder match my first production run?
Yes. Once a fit is approved the pattern is held, so a second colourway or a later reorder comes back the same shape. Where a fabric has changed between seasons we tell you rather than substitute quietly.
