Stretch is the requirement
Volleyball is played with the arms above the head for much of a match, and the jersey has to move with that without riding up. A rigid polyester shirt that works for a field sport is the wrong garment here.
Volleyball jerseys are therefore cut in a polyester–elastane knit with the stretch running around the body, and the pattern is drafted with less ease than a soccer or basketball shirt so the shirt stays in place through an overhead swing. Body length is slightly longer for the same reason.

The libero jersey
The libero must be clearly distinguishable from the rest of the team, so that jersey is produced in a contrasting colourway on the same base design. Plan it into the artwork from the start rather than ordering it separately afterwards — sublimating a contrast version of an existing design is straightforward, but matching it to a kit already in production is not always possible if the fabric lot has moved on.
Fabric
- Polyester–elastane knits with four-way stretch
- Lighter performance polyester for warm halls
- Mesh panels for ventilation at the back and underarm
- Higher-elastane knits for spandex bottoms
Fabric recovery matters here more than weight. Volleyball kit is worn in long tournament days with repeated stretching, and a fabric with poor recovery will be visibly baggy at the elbows and seat by the end of one.
Bottoms
Volleyball bottoms range from short spandex to a regular team short, and which you order is usually a decision about the level and the age group rather than about performance. Both can be produced in the same colourway and fabric family as the jersey.
Where knee pads are worn, the short should not end at the pad line — it either sits clearly above it or clearly below. Say what your players wear and we will set the length accordingly.
Numbers and names
Numbers are sublimated into the fabric, front and back, which keeps the surface flat and avoids applied numbers lifting under repeated stretching. Names sit above the back number where used.
Number size and placement are set by your league or federation and differ between them. Send the requirement with your artwork and we will produce to it.
